How can an exhibition become a learning space?
How can exhibitions be explored using artistic methods? And how can this provide inspiration for one’s own teaching, regardless of subject?
The Generation K – Culture Meets School further education day invites teachers from all types of schools and subjects to discover Kunsthalle Mainz as an out-of-school space for learning and experience.
Taking the exhibition Friendship as their starting point, participants will experiment with creative and participatory approaches to art in various learning workshops. The focus is on personal experience: how do observations give rise to questions? How can perspectives be shifted and content explored in greater depth through artistic practice? The methods used extend beyond the subject of art and open up links to a wide variety of school subjects and learning settings.
Following the practical sessions, the approaches are reflected upon collectively and applied to participants’ own teaching practice. The aim is to take away concrete ideas and tools for the classroom and to discover the potential of cultural education for school-based learning processes.
The professional development programmes run by Generation K – Culture Meets School are participatory, stimulating and research-based. They create space for experimentation, exchange and collaborative development.
The learning labs are led by experienced artists and trainers who have been working at the intersection of art, education and artistic research for many years. They bring perspectives from the fields of performance, media art, photography, scenography and participatory art practice. The team includes Sabine Felker, Nicole Heidel, Helen Jilavu, Stefanie Manhillen, Erik Schmelz and Seweryn Zelazny.
The group exhibition Friendship explores relationships as spaces of closeness, care, creativity and solidarity, but also of conflict and negotiation. The lead artists examine together with the participants what connects people and what role friendships play in an increasingly individualised society. The exhibition thus opens up various points of reference for societal, social and personal questions.
