The Kunsthalle Mainz wants to give as many people as possible access to contemporary art. The entire exhibition is accessible without steps and we are strive to make all events as barrier-free as possible.

Since 2020, the Kleine Halle (“small hall”) has provided a welcome addition to the exhibition space at Kunsthalle Mainz. This is where children, families and all other visitors have an opportunity to draw, construct, write, do puzzles and conduct research on topics connected with the current exhibition.
Thanks to a generous donation by Sparda-Bank Südwest, the design of this area makes it child-friendly and easily accessible for all. The open structure encourages visitors young and old alike to engage with the space autonomously.
It results in a mini-laboratory that pops up over the course of the exhibition as a place where visitors can carry out their own creative experiments in dialogue with contemporary art.
For school classes of all ages we offer tours with active elements through the current exhibition. Main topics and the duration of the tour can be agreed individually.

How do friendships form? What connects people—and why are we particularly drawn to certain individuals? Drawing on the theme of the current exhibition at the Kunsthalle Mainz, students explore friendship as a creative, social, and emotional force. During a collaborative creative session, they experience art as a space for reflection, experimentation, and exploration. Through play, topics such as closeness and distance, similarities and differences, and interpersonal relationships are brought to life.

As they explore the exhibition, the children discover different ideas about friendship and brainstorm ideas together. They then use paper, paint and collage materials to create their own imaginative ‘friendship potion’ – filled with creative ingredients such as courage, laughter, helpfulness and time for one another.

In workshops with various groups, the artist Kot’átková designs costumes as a second skin. They make emotions visible, tell untold stories, serve as protective or liberating shells, help us to be seen and heard – or enable us to hide and disappear. Inspired by Kot’átková’s artworks, the children develop their own costumes following a group tour. The children can bring along an old item of clothing (e.g. a jacket or a T-shirt) and decorate, glue and paint it using fabrics, paint and other materials.

In the children's animation workshop, children learn to create their own short films by animating things. Together they discover the basics of animation, such as movement and storytelling, in a playful way.

Through her project NOIRES, the artist Roxane Mbanga creates spaces for encounter, exchange and care. Her *Le Salon* (the living room) invites visitors to pause, spend time together and reflect on how community is formed. In doing so, she asks: What spaces do we need to experience friendship? Who feels welcome and who remains excluded?
After a guided tour of the exhibition, the pupils explore these questions. They then design and create their own pop-up space out of paper. Through folding, cutting and painting, they produce three-dimensional miniature spaces that represent personal places of encounter, retreat or community. The pop-up spaces reflect the participants’ needs, wishes and experiences, and invite us to reflect on the significance of spaces for friendship and living together.
