Are you turning 18 soon, or are you already 18, and do you feel like getting creative?
The Kunsthalle Mainz is turning 18 this year and invites everyone who is the same age or turning 18 this year to get creative together.
The Open Studio is a space for experimentation—free from pressure and judgment—where you can work together, with plenty of time and space for your creativity.
We want to break away from school-style grading and constant comparison. Instead, this is a place for experimentation and trying new things. I’ll prepare a small activity for each session. We’ll go outside and make lots of quick sketches of our surroundings or try our hand at a self-portrait. In between, we’ll do short warm-up exercises every now and then. You’re more than welcome to bring your own suggestions. If you already have your own project in mind and prefer to work in a group, you’re also very welcome here.
Here you’ll learn how to leave your perfectionism behind and rediscover the joy of experimenting. The goal is to support one another and simply have a good time.
I look forward to seeing you!

On Wednesday, 10/06 at 5 pm we invite you to Sámi Sounds with Dr. Hauke Dorsch. This listening session takes the current exhibition Britta Marakatt-Labba – Stitched Tracks as its starting point to present contemporary music from Sápmi, the regions of Northern Europe inhabited by the Sámi people. Following the joik workshop and listening session with Kari Heimen in February, Sámi Sounds will focus on music videos by contemporary artists from Sápmi. Together, we will listen to, watch, and discuss the works of artists including Mari Boine, Wimme, Ulla Pirttijärvi, Solju, Hildá Länsman, Vildá, Sofia Jannok, Kajsa Balto, and Elin Kåven.
Dr. Hauke Dorsch, director of the Archive for African Music at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, also appreciates music from outside the African continent. Trips to Norway and Sweden sparked his enthusiasm for Sámi music.

On Thursday, June 11, starting at 5:30 p.m., we cordially invite you to the Kunsthalle Mainz as part of the INSIGHTS series. In the three large galleries, you can explore the current solo exhibition by Britta Marakatt-Labba—*Stitched Tracks*—and join one of the exhibition talks. From 5:45 to 7:15 p.m., our art educators will delve deeper into selected works and the artist’s life in each of the three halls. On Tower Level III, you can also join our open embroidery, knitting, and crochet circle: Be sure to bring your current embroidery, knitting, or crochet project with you! It’s also worth taking a look at the Kunsthalle Mainz Shop.
With needle and thread, Britta Marakatt-Labba (born in 1951 in Sápmi) translates stories into fabric—partly figurative, partly as collages combined with other pieces of fabric—and frequently supplements these with colorful brushstrokes. The delicate embroideries deal with the stories and mythology of the Sámi people and the nature that provides a habitat for them and their reindeer. But they also address the threat to nature posed by resource extraction and ecological destruction, which results in the displacement of indigenous peoples. The visual narrative on fabric is Britta Marakatt-Labba’s method of asking questions and finding answers to existential thoughts.
Fragile worlds emerge through a fascinatingly detailed and intricate process. The precise placement of the scenes, the interplay between background and subject, and the tension between emptiness and the visual narrative make Britta Marakatt-Labba’s work unique. Explore her remarkable sense of pictorial space, narrative, and the vastness and tranquility of her compositions.Date:

Experience drawing as a meditative practice
Lines, dots, and shapes spontaneously emerge on a large sheet of paper, making your breath, your attention, and your mood visible. You choose pens and pencils according to your mood, combine colors and sizes, let your hand flow freely across the paper—and at the end, you can take a small piece of your drawing home as a memento. This meditation allows you to perceive mindfully, fosters your inner peace, and playfully opens up new creative impulses. Whether you have prior artistic experience or not.
