The exhibition Britta Marakatt-Labba – Stitched Tracks explores how art can open up new approaches to themes and content. The visual narrative on fabric is Britta Marakatt-Labba’s method for posing questions and finding answers to existential reflections. Fragile worlds emerge in a fascinatingly precise and meticulous manner. The precise placement of scenes, the interplay between background and motif, and the tension between emptiness and visual action make Britta Marakatt-Labba’s work unique. They demonstrate a phenomenal sense of pictorial space, of action, and of silence. Thousands of stitches form landscapes and narratives about a vulnerable world and its inhabitants.

The goal is to strengthen educational processes that enable participation and foster a vibrant learning culture.
Workshop Facilitators
Stefanie Manhillen is a mixed-media artist, trainer in creative teaching practices, and workshop facilitator at schools and museums. In her workshop, she introduces various artistic techniques and materials. Her goal is to help workshop participants develop their own artistic approach.
Helen Jilavu is a visual artist, photographer, and LTTA Artist. Since 2015, she has been working in cultural education as a workshop leader and provides professional development for various institutions, including the Mainz Academy of Fine Arts, elementary and secondary schools in Rhineland-Palatinate, as well as in adult education and teacher training. She is a co-founder of Kartenraum, an artists’ collective.
Marco Jodes has been working as a performer since 2002 and as an educator since 2006 in various institutions, including universities in Mainz and Koblenz, as well as at many elementary and secondary schools, youth centers, and theaters nationwide. Since the summer of 2025, he has also been working as a specialist therapist at the State Hospital and is particularly involved in the continuing education of teachers in the field of mental health.
Erik Schmelz is a visual artist, coach (EASC), and LTTA-Artist® who has been working at the intersection of art, education, and social innovation for over 15 years. Experience drawing as a meditative practice
Lines, dots, and shapes spontaneously emerge on a large sheet of paper, making your breath, your attention, and your mood visible. You choose pens and pencils according to your mood, combine colors and sizes, let your hand flow freely across the paper—and at the end, you can take a small piece of your drawing home as a memento. This meditation allows you to perceive mindfully, fosters your inner peace, and playfully opens up new creative impulses. Whether you have prior artistic experience or not.
Sat 13/06
11am–12.30 pm
Cost: 25 Euro per person
With registration at mail@kunsthalle-mainz.de until four days before the event
Are you turning 18 soon, or are you already 18, and do you feel like getting creative?
The Kunsthalle Mainz is turning 18 this year and invites everyone who is the same age or turning 18 this year to get creative together.
The Open Studio is a space for experimentation—free from pressure and judgment—where you can work together, with plenty of time and space for your creativity.
We want to break away from school-style grading and constant comparison. Instead, this is a place for experimentation and trying new things. I’ll prepare a small activity for each session. We’ll go outside and make lots of quick sketches of our surroundings or try our hand at a self-portrait. In between, we’ll do short warm-up exercises every now and then. You’re more than welcome to bring your own suggestions. If you already have your own project in mind and prefer to work in a group, you’re also very welcome here.
Here you’ll learn how to leave your perfectionism behind and rediscover the joy of experimenting. The goal is to support one another and simply have a good time.
I look forward to seeing you!
