Since 2020, the Kleine Halle (“small hall”) has provided a welcome addition to the exhibition space at Kunsthalle Mainz. This is where children, families and all other visitors have an opportunity to draw, construct, write, do puzzles and conduct research on topics connected with the current exhibition.
Thanks to a generous donation by Sparda-Bank Südwest, the design of this area makes it child-friendly and easily accessible for all. The open structure encourages visitors young and old alike to engage with the space autonomously.
It results in a mini-laboratory that pops up over the course of the exhibition as a place where visitors can carry out their own creative experiments in dialogue with contemporary art.

On this Guided tour, the facilitators take plenty of time to explore selected works of art together. A holistic, experiential encounter with the artworks is made possible. Together we see, feel, smell and hear the art in the exhibition. The facilitators speak in a simple and accessible language.

We invite you to experience the artworks and explore materials together.

Tue 28/10
10 a.m.–4.30 p.m.
As part of the state programme ‘Generation K – Culture Meets School’, art and education come together in a creative way – as a source of inspiration for contemporary subject teaching. Four formats have been developed for the afternoon workshop at the Kunsthalle, showing how artistic methods can be linked to various school subjects. Teachers will learn how exhibitions and cultural learning venues can be actively incorporated into subject teaching. This opens up new perspectives on teaching, learning and school development – practical, interdisciplinary and inspiring.
10 a.m.–1 p.m.: Giving the Earth a Voice – Writing Workshop
Methods of interdisciplinary, participatory learning – a workshop by Nicole Heidel
In an empathetic dialogue, we go in search of clues in the multifaceted exhibition setting. Creative techniques train our perception for intuitive, associative ‘reading’ and the expressiveness of our own writing, while also creating creative approaches to the topical theme of change and transformation. We then examine artistic processes as an innovative form of learning.
10.30 a.m.–1 p.m.: A word says more than a thousand pictures – audio and podcast
Workshop by Seweryn Zelazny
n this workshop, we immerse ourselves in the world of sounds and explore the exhibition with our ears. We focus solely on sound and then reflect on the results to develop ideas on how the exhibition context can be linked to various subjects.
2–4.30 p.m.: Mixed Media
Workshop by Sabine Felker
How can the sensory experiences and spaces for reflection that exhibition visits open up to us enrich interdisciplinary teaching? Using mixed media, we will create a shared landscape of ideas, methods and approaches.
2–4.30 p.m.: Needle in a haystack – photography
Workshop by Helen Jilavu
This workshop invites participants to engage in creative exploration within the context of the exhibition. Using photographic and artistic methods, participants will discover how subject-related content can be explored, reflected upon and linked to teaching through the interplay of space, theme and image.
Participation in all workshops is free of charge.
Please register at weber@kunsthalle-mainz.de, stating which workshop(s) you would like to attend.
This event is sponsored by the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of Education.
