When it was awarded its deed of foundation on 12 February 2007, Kunsthalle Mainz was officially recognized as a public foundation under civil law, based in Mainz. The foundation was initiated by Stadtwerke Mainz AG, which is, at the same time, its sponsor. It directly pursues exclusively nonprofitmaking objectives and its main aim is to promote and communicate contemporary art. The foundation is the organization behind Kunsthalle Mainz, on whose premises these objectives are implemented. The foundation's organs are its Board of Management and Board of Trustees. The Board of Management is tasked with managing the foundation and running day-to-day business. The Board of Trustees, consisting of figures from public life, performs a supervisory function.
